Shows the route taken by Pedro Joseph Alvarez in search of the legendary Ciudad de los Césares in the Chilean province of Llanquihue. Identifies lakes; wooded areas and Indian dwellings shown pictorially; the city is not shown. Forms part of Usauro Martínez de Bernabé's manuscript Verdad en campaña, tentatively dated 1784, which describes the region around Valdivia and expeditions in search of the legendary city (Ayer MS 1835).

Chronicler and poet of Valdivia. Son of a well-known family, originally from Cádiz, which settled in Chile in the 18th century. He spent 30 years assembling the material for his Verdad en campaña, which eventually came to be known as the official history of Valdivia.
